Location
The Apuan Industrial Zone (A.I.Z.) is placed
across the counties of Massa and Carrara, only two kilometres distant from the seaside and
a short way from the two main cities. It is crossed by the main communication lines
between Northern and Southern Italy along the west (Tyrrhenian) coast. It is close to some
of the main seaports and/or airports of Central Italy: Genoa, La Spezia, Pisa, Leghorn,
Florence. The A.I.Z. is completely urbanized and equipped with its own back seaport area,
corresponding to the Marina di Carrara port that territorially
belongs to it. In the A.I.Z., since 1938, there has been a continuous presence of
industrial settlements by the main public and private national groups (such as IRI, ENI
and MONTEDISON) in the mechanical, chemical and steel sectors. It is now characterized by
a wide concentration of small and medium-sized enterprises working on a variety of fields,
some of which technologically advanced.

Distinctive features of the area
The province of Massa-Carrara is characterized by a still rural inland of a great
landscape and naturalistic interest (the park of Apuan Alps, some Mediaeval castles,
trekking, horse riding, mountain biking, etc.) and a coast land where activities
concerning seaside tourism prevail (Versilia).
Road, highway and railway links with the neighbour areas are available and suitable, as
well as port and airport infrastructures within a short distance. Historical, artistic and
cultural traditions are renowned and important. There is an elevated degree of education
(one finds 5 great Universities within a 160 km. range).
Several private and/or public agencies for real service providing to enterprises and a
Consortium for high technology enhancement are active in the area.
